Jack Thompson, Man or Mouse?

I tell you, this news has to be the greatest news I have yet to see on the video game scene in a long time. Move over PSP...step aside upcoming Xbox360. Jack Thompson just got pwned!

I hate to give Jack Thompson any more press, but his downward spiral into madness is too compelling. Today, final victory over the man was achieved by the guys over at Penny Arcade, and it may be safe to say that nobody will take him seriously ever again.
Which makes today a pretty good day for those of us who enjoy freedom.
For those of you unfamiliar with what I am yammering about, you can get a pretty good overview of the Jack Thompson saga from the story of how he tried to arrest my boss. Since then, Jack has only gotten stranger.
First, the National Institute on Media and the Family, a group I would normally describe as a "bunch of crackpots", actually did something rational and issued an open letter asking Mr. Thompson to stop using their name all the time. The gist of it was: Dude, you're too crazy, even for us. Jack responded with some vague threats and insinuations that NIMF was being paid off by Target and Best Buy, who Jack says he is currently suing over Bully, a video game they didn't make and that isn't even out yet.
Next, Jack made a $10,000 challenge, offering to donate the money to the charity of Paul Eibler's (the president of Take Two Interactive) choice, if someone would make a video game where a deranged sadist kills "Paula Eibler", the president of "Take This", as well as going on a killing spree throughout the video game industry.
Weird, huh? But nobody loves a challenge like gamers do, and sure enough within days, there was a whole plethora of games that conformed to Jack's scary vision. Try out Zork Thompson 1.0 or A Modest Video Game Proposal or The Golden Rule: O.K.'s Revenge or Jack Thompson Presnts: Osaki!. Most impressive of all is the Grand Theft Auto 3 mod (how ironic!) Defamation of Character: A Jack Thompson Murder Simulator which should easily qualify all of Jack's criteria.
Confronted with actually ponying up the dough, Jack actually backs down and breaks his word. That's right, he won't even give the money he promised to charity.
This is when the guys over at Penny Arcade, who had an earlier encounter with Jack, step up to the plate. Where Jack Thompson weasels out like.. well, a weasel, P.A. has actually donated the whole $10,000 to charity in Jack Thompson's name. There needs to be a new word for having cajones like that.
Gabe, Tycho, my hat is off to you. It is a nice hat, and it is off, clutched before me in a manner of awe and supplication.
I personally am going to double my contribution to Child's Play this year, and I urge the rest of you to do the same. "

It was only a matter of time until a mod team took Jack Thompson's disgusting revenge fantasy and made it flesh - and, just as I suggested, it was deemed insufficient.
Thompson now claims that his repellent suggestion was "satire," and we must conclude that his financial offer was also satire, some new breed of satire apparently that I'm sure is just hilarious to people in need.
You know what, Jack? We're going to be the men you're not. You said that your insulting, illusory ten thousand dollars would go to the charity of Paul Eibeler's choice. We've got a good guess that he'd direct your nonexistant largesse toward The Entertainment Software Association Foundation, a body that has raised over six point seven million dollars over the last eight years. We've just made the donation you never would, and never meant to. Ten thousand dollars' worth. And we made it in your name.

Well now. Jack Thompson, I believe you have just been pwned. Time to hide back in your little hermit cave. You really do reap what you sow.

  • That has to be the biggest slap in the face.

  • That guy is the biggest jerk I have ever seen. All he does is go around looking for a way to gethis ugly mug on tv. He is like the white version of Jesse Jackson.

  • ...a game where you kill game developpers...??? For charity? I wrong in assuming it's already been done in the not so good FPS "Postal 2"???

    ...just a thought from Mokin...

  • I was thinking that too!
That game was terrible though. Probably was secretly made by Jack, and since sales were pathetic, he complains that other companies can do it better (GTA), and so begins his little war against them. lol

Either way, Jack has some problems, and I'm glad he has finally been knocked down off his high horse!

He will probably try to sue someone

  • I really wish America would see that Jack really isn't after the good of America, but he is nothing but a camera chaser looking to find some way to get himself on the news and look good. He doesn't care for anyone but himself, andif you read his email replies to several people, you will see that. He is insulting to others, and if others don't agree with his way 100%, they have a "mental Illness". He is a loser, and its good to see Penny Arcade put him in his right place!
